CHOOSE THE RIGHT TYPE OF LEATHER

The first way, which is the fastest way to learn how to break into Dr. Martens, is to make sure that you buy the right pair. Doc Martens offers different types of leather, but each of them takes different periods to penetrate it compared to similar boots like Solovair. If you want to get into a pair of Doc Martens as soon as possible (in my experience, in a week or less), I highly recommend buying Doc Martens in soft leather or vegan Doc.

DOC MARTENS IN SOFT LEATHER

Soft leather is softer than traditional leather and makes it 10 times easier to break. They fit like all the other Docs, but the leather is very soft, which means that it has a less rigid structure. The soft leather Doc Martens to be obtained are nappa leather, Virginia leather or Pisa leather. You can get into these in about two, maybe three days, and if you are very ambitious, you can probably crack it on your first attempt.

Wear these boots inside and with thick socks for best results. Avoid heat or leather emollients, as these types no longer need to be decomposed. Investing in a good shoe Stretcher that can stretch the leather for you overnight is also a game changer, especially if you have wider or taller feet.

VEGAN DOC MARTENS

As for the vegan documents, they are made of synthetic material, so you don’t have to worry about penetrating anything, because it’s not leather and they don’t have the same robust structure as genuine leather. The only thing I noticed with the vegan documents is that they are a little tight. I would increase the size if you are in between sizes and also get a shoe tensioner to quickly stretch the shoe. However, in most matter, they are very easy to crack once you put them on.

TIPS FOR SHRINKING DOC MARTENS SMOOTH LEATHER

What if you don’t want any of the vegan or smooth leather options? If you want a little more smooth, original dr Martens leather and want to learn how to install Doc Martens as soon as possible, follow my tested favorite tips.

1. USE A LEATHER CONDITIONER OR FABRIC SOFTENER

Once you’ve gotten that coveted pair from Doc Martens, the first thing you should do is use a trusted leather conditioner or fabric softener to make the break-in time as simple as possible.

My favorite is the Dr. balm. Martens Wonder, which is a great product to soften the leather (which makes it more comfortable to wear) and make your new boots look new for decades to come. It is not only The fabric softener associated with the brand, but the configuration is also ideal. The jar comes with a separate sponge from the balm, which makes it both easy to store and use and friendly for beginners.

All you have to do is apply a small amount of conditioner to your boots and rub them into the leather. If you don’t want to use the miracle balm, you can also use leather oil or other balms to protect the leather.

2. APPLY HEAT

The second thing to keep in mind when learning how to break Doc Martens is the application of heat. I do not recommend using a hair dryer because it can give very confusing results and require much more effort.

Instead, I recommend using a small radiator. For best results and the lowest electricity bill, heat a small room, then leave your Doc Martens in it for about 10 to 15 minutes, then carry them around the house. This makes the leather softer and more flexible, allowing your boots to adapt more quickly to the shape of your feet, slightly reducing sore feet and potential blisters. You can also take the time to massage the boots on key sensitive areas such as the back of the heels or around the toe area to make the leather even softer.

3. WEAR THICK SOCKS

The next thing to consider is wearing thick socks. For the first time you wear your Docs, wear thick socks, or you can double socks or provide a cushion for your feet and protect them from chafing or blisters that may occur during the break-in period.

Top tip: Investing in a pair of merino wool or padded hiking socks (extra padding around the ankle and sole of the foot) can also make the process easier.

4. WEAR YOUR BOOTS AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE

Then you should wear your boots as often as possible. It seems like a no-brainer, but wearing them constantly for about a week really helps. The more you wear them, the faster they fall apart.

Start by wearing them for a short time and gradually increase the duration. You can wear them at home, go shopping or work. Try to build up to a thousand steps a day in your documents, but also remember that if your feet start to hurt, please take them off and rest for the day. You don’t want your feet to form pains or blisters, which affects how quickly you can break them.

5. STUFF YOUR BOOTS WHEN YOU’RE NOT WEARING THEM

The last thing you can do when you find out how to break Dr. Martens in is to stuff your boots.

If you don’t carry your documents, you will want to fill them with newspapers, or if you have a shoe stretcher, this also works great. If you use newspaper, make sure you use a lot of it, the more crowded the better the stretch you may be able to get overnight. I would recommend using this method for at least a week to achieve the expected results.

Shoe tensioners are my personal favorite and favorite method, because they allow you to adjust the pressure you want to apply to the leather. This allows the boots to retain their shape when you are not wearing them. Once you put them on, they fit perfectly.
